Dancing

Objectively Speaking

There is a look of knowing
on my yet-to-be walking
granddaughter’s face
as, new to this, she stands alone
in a great big kitchen
small fingers spread,

dancing.

I am left
to wonder at her wisdom

while in this moment my neurons fire,
my pulse quickens,
and these imperfect thoughts
transfer electrochemical impulses
from my brain down to my fingers
to an electronic page,
via a keyboard,

in a vain attempt
to recreate the grace
mirrored on the surface
of her immersion
in the music.

Ella at (almost) One

Here's day ten's submission of NaPoWriMo (a poem a day for the month of April in honor of National Poetry Month).

Ella at (almost) One

You hold up
your hand
and point.
Your mouth an “O”
of discovery.

One finger,
out to the world.
On your next birthday,
will you hold two?

Everything is surprise
and delight.
Now is all there is.

With each new gasp

at the dog,
the balloon,
the flower,
your grandma coming
through the door,

you teach me to see
the world
again.
